Introducing the concept for The Public Press, a San Francisco-based charitable non-profit journalism outlet, ad-free and intent on creating and collecting aggressive work.
The aim of The Public Press is to foster journalism with no commercial ambitions. It is soliciting funds along the way. And it wants to provide a multiplatform journalistic operation. It isn't purely digital --- it wants an ink-on-paper edition, with plenty of reversed-published community content.
Beyond that there are still questions. While it is sponsored by the Bay Area Independent Arts & Media outfit and intends to employ professional journalists, it isn't clear who is establishing the outlet.
Its FAQ is here, a page on a larger site.
