Advertising has been known to have a relationship to journalism, so when two of the world's largest ad firms announce (and, today, call off) a merger, it is news to the craft. The $35-billion merger between Publicis Groupe and Omnicom is off. The New York Times reports the two firms are at odds on the details, and there are regulatory issues lurking that might make it even more difficult to accomplish. The merged firm would have been the largest advertising-related company in the world.

Only two Indian journalists are based in Pakistan, and their presence there now is ending. The government has opted not to renew their visas. The Wall Street Journal reports journalists from The Hindu and the Press Trust of India have a week to leave the country, leaving Pakistan without any direct, ongoing reporting from its neighbour.

Historically, U.S. intelligence officials have been able to discuss on background information already leaked and in the public domain. Not any longer. The New York Times reports the government has imposed a policy that prevents any discussion of leaks or unauthorized disclosure of information, for fear it will deepen the threat to national security.
