For Monday, December 2, 2013, here are some media stories of note:

These have been rough days for journalists in Kiev, where protests in the streets met with police force and injured reporters and photographers. Olga Rudenko, writing for the Kyiv Post, chronicles the clashes over the weekend in which at least 40 journalists were hurt. The Ukraine government has promised an investigation.

Bloomberg News has been in the news recently for concerns about how it is handling its presence in China. Today it seems the authorities are much more displeased than pleased, excluding Bloomberg's British political correspondent Robert Hutton from a news conference with the Chinese premier and the British prime minister. BuzzFeed reports on the snub.

When you receive a trove of documents, should you share them? Last week PandoDaily's Mark Ames raised questions about the fairness of former Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald bringing the stash of Edward Snowden revelations to the new Pierre Omidyar-financed news operation. He even questioned whether Greenwald will have agency to publish all he wishes. Not surprisingly, Greenwald leapt to his defence and has crafted a lengthy FAQ on this matter. It is not a pretty dispute.

Journalism.co.uk looks at detective.io, a new database project underwritten by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help journalists look at relationships and connections in datasets. The project lets users input data and maps connections to produce a searchable database.

Good Tuesday, here are some media stories of note for August 13, 2013:

Hamish McKenzie, writing for PandoDaily, notes the arrival of two long-form journalism entitites and argues that such work is the new necessity for organizations as part of a "slow media" movement. He says news is increasingly a commodity, that there are revenue opportunities within in-depth work, that media consumption across tablets is more likely to include longer reads, that Google is trying to align its search engine to quality, and that prestige accompanies long-form work and is bound to attract a greater reputation.

Butch Ward, writing for Poynter, identifies how managers can put themselves in a position to succeed in newsrooms. He says there are clear tips: use a calendar, make a list of tasks, make that list difficult and full of good intentions, share your good intentions, and take five minutes daily to reflect.

Canada's largest newspaper, the Toronto Star, has joined the already sizeable list of media with an online paywall. Its threshold is 10 stories a month, after which customers will pay $9.99 plus tax monthly. Most of the prominent Canadian print/online newsrooms now feature paywalls.

Three media stories of note for Tuesday, March 12, 2013:

A proposed Texas law rearranges the obligations of media and the opportunities for litigants in defamation cases. Nieman Journalism Lab reports on the proposed "retraction statute" that would oblige those who believe they have been defamed to contact publishers to give them an opportunity to retract, correct or clarify with the same prominence as the original publication. If they do so, a plaintiff can't be awarded punitive damages. If they do, they are entitled to a reasonable amount of information that can confirm the error. Out-of-court efforts would be made, too, to avoid expensive and protracted legislation. The bill would promote "truth in publication."

Gawker's Deadspin blog, known for its verve, has taken a detour in its approach and suddenly opened itself to a public "contributor network" with the same creative tools as its writing staff. It has PandoDaily pronouncing it as throwing in the towel and taking the route toward Huffington Post and Bleacher Report and away from its original path. PandoDaily's Bryan Goldberg says all media properties need to embrace the fact that more traffic is better than less, professional writers are not the only valid voices, and innovation is the only route out of the challenging economics.

Veteran news executive and advisor Gordon Crovitz weighs in on last week's spat between freelance journalist Nate Thayer, who worked for him in Cambodia, and The Atlantic Online. It will be recalled that The Atlantic wanted Thayer to rewrite his reporting fot them free. Crovitz, writing for the Wall Street Journal, laments this and notes that the tumult in journalism is driven by declines in advertising. Some journalism will be free, but the important journalism will require underwriting. "We need to find ways of paying for it," he concludes.
