The sudden surge in the New York Times stock has a little something to do with new data on August news Web site traffic. NYTimes.com experienced a year-over-year increase of 52 per cent. Newspaper-based firms had a great month for Web traffic. Latimes.com had a whopping 66 per cent growth, while Washingtonpost.com was up 25 per cent. One of the few that strangely didn't grow, considering it's the principal site of John McCain's home state, was azcentral.com.
The Olympic lift and the presidential campaigns clearly helped, just as it's clear that Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal are having banner weeks on the basis of the decidedly unbanner-like week on Wall Street itself.
Almost all of the 30 top sites experienced substantial year-over-year growth in unique visitors, says Nielsen Online.
