Conflict of interest disclosure #1: I teach part-time as an adjunct professor at University of British Columbia's graduate school of journalism.
Conflict of interest disclosure #2: My wife is the recently appointed director of the school (We take measures to police the inherent challenge of this.)
Conflict of interest disclosure #3: Many of my friends are professors, many of my former colleagues are professors.
Conflict of interest disclosure #4: Our newsroom uses many professors at local universities as guest commentators and contributors.
Which is why I will not comment, but will pass on, Jonathan Zimmerman's argument in Christian Science Monitor, that university professors offer a solution to what ails newspapers. He suggests getting their work free. I'll leave it at that.
