The New York Observer has decided to put cash rewards behind its drive to motivate reporters to participate in the web and social media.
It is offering reporters prizes for page views, the number of posts, the increase in Twitter followers, the number of comments and the number of other sites picking up their work. The top prize is $500 and no one can win more than $2,500.
It provides a few suggestions on how to compete: link to old stories, provide conversation starters to fuel comments, look at Google and Twitter trends as source material for stories, and offer commentary outside of a beat to raise the number of posts.
