The World Association of Newspapers digital publishing conference in Amsterdam heard today from the U.S. adviser to the Guardian. Caroline Little said the subscription model for online news isn't workable. Apart from some niche sites, it's doubtful it will ever provide sufficient funds.
Instead, Little advocates the advertising-driven model, which is where most media organizations have placed their bets in recent years. Trouble is, she's finding there are sufficient revenue streams of ad dollars --- at least, not yet.
