Avil Thomas-Lester has had to face the same mid-career dilemma as many print journalists: Adapt or face diminution. It's clear the finish line isn't within reach doing what you've been doing. The new technology offers a different relationship with a community, but for many journalists the offering is hardly a blessing. The tasks are significant, in some cases daunting, and the payback is often delayed. But she's now going to get comfortable in reinvention --- in fact, she's writing about it online for the Washington Post and, yes, inviting others to help her define and craft the issues. She acknowledges there are steps to go. Her comfort with the telephone over email and believes the BlackBerry is punishment for something she once did. But her journey will be an interesting one to peruse from time to time, because many are on the similar trek.
