Steve Outing, the respected and venerable columnist for Editor & Publisher, has taken the step of scoping out the all-digital newsroom remnant of the newspaper.
He takes a good whirl at the attributes of the digital newsroom and arrives at these:
1. Fewer journalists. 2. Fewer stories, more blogs. 3. Every journalist gets a community. 4. Fewer long stories, regular blog updates, more regular instant updates.
"The great hope will be that these digital-only newspaper descendants will learn and grow, and once again provide more jobs for journalists."
Kirk: I feel like I left out so much on that column, even at something like 3,000 words. I'll probably explore this a bit further on my blog (steveouting.com) and maybe in another E&P column. Points I have more to say on but didn't cover adequately in this column: - Revenue model better fleshed out - Role of editors - Scope of coverage (didn't get into it in column but in the scenario I was envisioning of a local newspaper surviving as digital only, we're mostly talking local, of course; not much point in devoting limited editorial resources to commodity national/international stuff; things like movie reviews doubtful since that's served so well on web and phones)
