Doc Searls observes that we're entering a new age of journalism, the era of post-largesse. The family compacts that ushered in large media are gradually removing themselves, or being removed, from the business.

And, because those families had a commitment to the public mission of journalism, that leaves the craft in the hands potentially with those who don't.

Kirk, I'd say the 'new era' began at least 25 years ago when Wall Street discovered the huge profit margins in newspapers and began viewing them as primarily a money-making venture. Searle is right, but a couple of decades late.

I'd trace it back, too, to the days of public trading. When newspapers could be blithe about quarterly results or analyst calls, they could be different.
