Christian Science Monitor, one of the most contextual and literate of newspapers, is moving from a daily to a weekly paper  in April 2009. a weekly print format and a more aggressive online posture (at the moment its site is a greater reflection of the print product).
The news organization is financed by the Christian Science church and its subsidy will be reduced in the years ahead. The move heavily reduces production and delivery costs of the print edition.

A weekly format is likely best for the CSM considering their delivery costs and spread-out readership.

The local daily will survive. It can more easily target advertisers and attract subscribers.

Given the reflectiveness of its work, it will be interesting in a Web-first format to see how contextual CSM can be. That's an enormous qualitative challenge.
Agreed, a weekly format won't hurt, because many of the Monitor's items have a less urgent, more considered quality to them.
